Low Income Home Construction/Renovation United Way
General Information
Agency: Habitat for Humanity of Yuma, Inc.
Program name: Low Income Home Construction/Renovation
Description : Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat houses. Habitat is not a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment and the monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor -- sweat equity -- into building their Habitat house and the houses of others.
Hours of Operation: Monday - Friday / 9am - 5pm
Eligibility Requirements: To qualify for a Habitat house, a family's total combined income must not exceed 80% of the Area Median Income, which is currently $32,800 for a family of four in Yuma. A family selection committee chooses the homeowners based on three criteria: their level of need; their willingness to become partners in the program and perform up to 500 hours of "sweat equity" labor working on their own house, another family's house, or some other Habitat project; and their ability to pay the no-interest loan.
Intake Procedure: Applications are taken at least once a year. Requested forms are mailed at the beginning of the application period or may be picked-up at the Yuma Community Food Bank or any Albertson's store. The interview and selection process, which includes a home visit, may take up to six months. The board of directors makes selections based upon a point system that uses the HUD criteria for housing. Every Habitat affiliate follows a nondiscriminatory policy of family selection. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing the families who receive Habitat houses.
