Turn a Child's Life Around --- Join a Community Justice Board!

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on February 17, 2011

If you volunteer for a Community Justice Board, you will join a team of volunteers who help children in trouble with the law for the first time and their families.

Each Community Justice Board --currently there are six (6) Boards) --meets with the juvenile, and the juveniles' parent/guardian and the crime victim (if any). This is a series of conferences, usually once every 2 weeks, until the Board is satisfied that the child is on the right track. Each Board handles no more than 2 cases at a time and only one case is dealt with at each meeting.

At the First Conference, after listening to the parties, the Community Justice Board assigns tasks for the juvenile. These assignments ("Consequences") are meant to be positive learning experiences to help the child learn accountability for their actions. Also, assignments are designed to build decision making and other life skills. Families are helped by showing them how to find resources such as counseling, youth activities, job training and tutoring.

If the juvenile successfully completes the our program, no criminal charges will be filed.

We are always recruiting and training volunteers for Community Justice Boards.

We welcome you to attend and observe the Community Justice Boards in action.

Our current schedule of Board meetings is posted on the Internet (Search words "Yuma Justice Boards"). Also, for more information, you may call Mary White or Cynthia Ramos at 817-4300 or e-mail

Welcome!

We provide the training. There is no upper or lower age limit for volunteers. Every volunteer must undergo a background check. Persons who have criminal convictions for crimes against children or sex crimes are automatically disqualified. Other criminal convictions will be considered on a case by case basis, depending upon the circumstances.

Our volunteers cooperate together, in teams, to help children and families. We do not work one-on-one with children. This is not a mentor program although we may refer appropriate juveniles to mentoring programs in the community.
