The Arts and Culture Division, through the Yuma Art Center, exists to promote the importance of the arts and culture for the enhancement of the community. The Division works to strengthen existing arts organizations and facilities and develop programs and facilities where voids exist.
Description:
The Arts & Culture Division serves as support to the City's seven member Parks, Arts, Recreation, and Culture Commission and the Ad-Hoc Yuma Public Art Committee. The Arts & Culture Division functions as the center of information for the community regarding Arts and Cultural activities and manages the 40,000 square foot Yuma Art Center at 254 S. Main Street which includes the Historic Yuma Theatre.
History:
The organization was established in 1997 by the Yuma City Council. Beginning with only two staff members and a limited budget, we now have six full-time and one part-time employees. The completion of the Yuma Art Center thrust our division into new territory creating an environment conducive to the promotion of the arts in our community. We manage the 640 seat Historic Yuma Theatre that showcases local arts performers as well as providing a year-round venue for professional touring groups. A four gallery visual art space exhibits artworks created by local, regional, national, and internationally known artists. Education spaces allows for classes in theatre, music, and visual arts, including photography, which includes a dedicated black and white photography developing studio. And, for our popular ceramics programming the Art Center offers a fully-equipped ceramics studio for adult and youth arts classes. The Art Center also provides summer youth arts camps, including the performances of the Infinite Imagination Youth Theatre.
