SAFE KIDS' mission is to reduce the number of accidental injuries and deaths to children.

Description:
We are a grassroots organization made up of health and safety professionals, parents and other interested individuals that are advocates for the safety of our children.

We provide education and training and materials in injury prevention areas of:
Child Safety Seats
Bicycle helmets
Fire Prevention
Water Safety
Firearm Safety
Poison and choking safety
Falls reduction
Home safety for children
Fire and burn prevention

We initiated the City of Yuma Bicycle Helmet Ordinance in 1997 (children under 18 must wear a bicycle helmet) and offer discounted bicycle helmets through our program at the Yuma County Health Services District (formerly the Yuma County Health Dept.).

More recently we initiated a similar bike helmet ordinance in San Luis, AZ that passed in May 2008.

We provide child safety seats and training (both for parents and instructors) through the Yuma County Public Health Services District (YCPHSD)and Yuma Regional Medical Center using N.H.T.S.A. (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) Certified Passenger Safety Technicians for the education piece.

Classes at YCPHSD are done every-other Friday, in both English and Spanish. Please go to our website for exact dates (yumasafekids.org). For classes at the Health District call 928-317-4580.

Car Seat classes are also held at YRMC and are done on a period1c basis throughout the week, based on demand. For information on car seat classes at YRMC, call (928) 336-7058.

History:
We started our Coalition in 1990 as a result of Yuma County's high infant drowning rate (highest in the nation per-capita). As a result we have reduced that injury area to below the national and state average.

We specialize on the highest injury areas; that of motor vehicle crashes involving passengers, pedestrians, and bicyclists and water safety.

As a grassroots coalition, we are required to have a lead agency. Our lead agency since our inception has been the Yuma County Public Health Service District (aka. Health Department) and has been instrumental in providing Safe Kids it's infrastructure. We have been a Safe Kids Coalition since 1992.
